Kindness by Phoenix and Griffin

Phoenix and Griffin Roses

Each week we do Random Acts of Kindness with Phoenix and Griffin.  They chose to buy roses and we let them decide where they wanted to take them.  The first week they picked McDonalds.  There was snow covering the ground and Phoenix spotted a girl sweeping the parking lot.  It was cold.  He walked up to her, handed her the rose, and said:  “We are doing kind things for people because that’s what God tells us to do, and we just wanted you to know that God loves you.”  Then Griffin went in and saw a girl who worked there. She was sitting alone in a booth on her break.  He walked up to her and was super shy. (He has social anxiety toward girls.)  He wouldn’t talk, but he did hand her the rose. Phoenix, being the good big brother that he is, told the girl the same thing he told the first girl.  Then we left.

The second week it was just Griffin.  Phoenix was at his dad’s house.  Griffin wanted to take a flower to Waffle House this time.  I let him pick his rose out and buy it himself. *There was a God lesson in this trip for him to learn, which was cool.*  On the way to Waffle House he was thirsty.  We were in a hurry.  We had a lot of errands to run after school.  I told him we weren’t going to have time to stop for just a drink, but we would be home soon and could get one there.  He was disappointed, and I felt bad.  But, we were on a time crunch, he could wait.  So, into Waffle House we went.  He would barely walk in on his own, and tried to hide behind his coat.  He saw a woman, I asked if he wanted to give her the flower.  He shook his head yes.  The woman approached him and said “That’s a pretty flower!  Are you guys eating here?”  He wouldn’t talk, but gave her the flower.  I explained to her that we were teaching our kids the importance of being kind to others, and we wanted to give her a flower.  I asked him if he wanted to tell her what we had practiced saying in the car.  He told me he forgot, but he was just being shy.  And that’s okay, foundations are being laid.  I said “We want to let you know that God loves you.” She said “He surely does.”  Then she asked him if he was thirsty.  He looked at me for approval.  She said she wanted to do something nice for him since he did something nice for her.  She gave him a chocolate milk, which he loves!  We got in the car and I said “Griffin, isn’t it cool how you were thirsty and after you did something nice for someone God gave you a drink?”  He said “That wasn’t God, that was a woman!”  I told him that sometimes God works through people.  We are all here to help one another.  He was just happy to have something to drink.

God works through us all, even kids!  This is a great lesson for them.  It’s easy to do and understand.  God asks us to do kind things for others without boasting.  I write about this not to boast, but to teach others the importance of kindness.  I give God all the glory because he is The Man, and I am his servant.  Try doing something kind with your kids this week.  You never know who’s day you can brighten just by extending a little kindness.

Over the last two weeks our viewers submitted 2 names of people who needed some uplifting art from the boys.  Then, Jeremy, myself, Phoenix, and Griffin picked another 6 random names from the phone book.  It was a really fun activity to do as a family.  It warms my heart to see Phoenix and Griffin extend their love onto others.  And, it makes me an even prouder Momma to hear their tiny, sweet voices send prayers up for the people we sent Godvelopes to.

If you know of someone struggling or in need of some cheery art from two special little dudes, please send us their names and addresses @ http://www.robynshelbourne@gmail.com.  If you or your family would like to send some art or encouraging words their way, they would love that.  Here’s our address:
