Rock Light Goes to Culinary School

A few weeks ago I introduced My Own Samaria’s Teen Life readers to a girl named Rock Light.  She was the first Teen Life participant.  In her questionnaire, she revealed that she wanted to become a chef.  My brain started spinning on how I could make something special happen for her.  I have a friend, Lindsey Briggs, who is in Culinary Arts School at West Kentucky Community and Technical College.  I contacted her, we brainstormed, and then she gave me a couple names of people to contact.  I would like to say that some people in this world are truly nice and helpful when it comes to making other’s feel special, and Chef Patrick Fletcher and Lindsey at the Culinary Arts School are a couple of those people.  Chef Patrick didn’t hesitate when I asked him if he would be willing to let Rock Light come in and shadow Lindsey.  We set up a date and time with Chef Patrick, Lindsey, and Rock Light’s Dad, and waited for the day to approach.

This was a surprise.  Rock Light had no clue what was going on but tried her best to get anyone to reveal the secret.  Her Dad told her she was going fishing, and while that wasn’t exactly true…  She did get to prepare a seafood dish, (Shrimp Remoulade).  She was stoked when we walked in and said, “Oh my gosh!  I know where this is!  Thank you so much!”  She was all smiles, concentration, and appreciation that day.  I got to stand over and watch her make her dish from start to finish.  She started out with a recipe and ingredients and ended up with a plated dish that looked like a professional made it.  I was proud of her and beyond excited that I got to be a part of her special day.

Thank you again to Chef Patrick Fletcher, West Kentucky Community and Technical College Culinary Arts School, and Lindsey Briggs for making Rock Light’s life a little brighter.
