Wanna be a Baller? Then Stop Drinking Camels!

Jesus vs. ReligionJesus vs. Religion

Is this a real thing, like in real life?  Can we just go ahead and squash this debate once and for all?  Puh-leasssse?

God made Jesus.  Jesus was God in the flesh.  He walked the Earth, on his actual feet, and told people about God, Heaven, and things to come.  He healed people.  He loved people.  He spent his life to the very last second LIVING AND SPREADING THE WORD.  He fueled others.  Jesus was a freaking baller.

Man made Religion.  Religion is not God but about God.  Religious people walk, on their actual feet into a church where they sit on their actual butts to hear the Word of God (that they already know) with a bunch of other religious people who also sit on their actual butts.  Then they drive off in their actual cars to an actual restaurant where they sit on their actual butts some more eating actual food.  And then they actually go home.  On repeat weekly.  Wow.  What in the Actual Hell do religious people Actually DO?  Fuel themselves or Fuel others?

If you Google Jesus vs. Religion or what Jesus says about Religion you’ll get a lot of things, mostly opinions, some truth.  I will say this though, Jesus and God DO NOT HATE RELIGION.  They don’t hate.  God = Love and Love doesn’t hate.

What Jesus did say about Religion:  There’s a long passage in Matthew.  I won’t post it all, just a piece.  If you’d like to read it all… It’s good.  Matthew 23.  Dig in.

Matthew 23:1-7 and 23-26:

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, “The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees are the official interpreters of the law of Moses. So practice and obey whatever they tell you, but don’t follow their example. For they don’t practice what they teach. They crush people with unbearable religious demands and never lift a finger to ease the burden.

“Everything they do is for show. On their arms they wear extra wide prayer boxes with Scripture verses inside, and they wear robes with extra long tassels.[b] And they love to sit at the head table at banquets and in the seats of honor in the synagogues. They love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi.’

23 “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law—justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things. 24 Blind guides! You strain your water so you won’t accidentally swallow a gnat, but you swallow a camel!

25 “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy—full of greed and self-indulgence! 26 You blind Pharisee! First wash the inside of the cup and the dish, and then the outside will become clean, too.

Daaaaannnnggg…  What in the world did the Pharisee’s do to get called out so hard core by Jesus?  They let legalities trump God’s word.  They performed and observed hundreds of rules and rituals, but they didn’t actually follow God’s Word and treat people the way they should be treated.  They even played a part of Jesus’ trial to be put to death.  EEEEKKKKK…

How does modern day religion compare to the Pharisees?  Our way is the only way.  You can’t be a part of our church or religion unless you clean your act up.  You can no longer be a part of our church because you’re divorced.  You are a single mom living with someone who isn’t your children’s father and you’re not married so you don’t meet our standards.  You’re a drug addict; we can’t help you but someone with more knowledge would be better equipped.  You’re addicted to pornography.  You’re a stripper.  You’re gay.  You’re black, white, Asian, Muslim, so you have your own place to worship.  You’re too dirty.

How does that camel taste?  Should you go build an altar, grab a goat, carry it on your back to the altar, slit its throat, and sacrifice it?  Uhhhhhh….  Now it’s time to get lashed, have your left hand cut off, your eye gouged out, and your first born son must be killed.  Uhhhhh….

Hey guess what? Because God sent Jesus here to die and absorb all our sins, we don’t have to do those things anymore.  There are over 600 laws in the Old Testament.  If you’re still observing them and getting caught up in those laws and technicalities, you’re doing it wrong folks.  The same goes even if you’re observing some but not all of them…  Why even do one but not the other 600?  Grace wins every time because God said so.

Romans 6:14 “For sin shall not be master over you.  For you are not under law but under grace.”

Get out of the walls of “the Church” more.  Church is good, but actually going out and talking to people in the world is greater.  Why?  Because it gives glory to God.  Oh, and because that’s what Jesus did.  If he was good enough to die for us aren’t we good enough to try and live like Him?  We will fail, yes.  But, we owe it to Him to try.

Break the walls down, use your hands, feet and mouths, and give Him the Glory!

Thank you God.  Your son was/is a Baller.  I will try daily not to choke on camels.  Please forgive me when I do though.  In your son’s name I pray.  Amen.

Here’s a video that is just pure awesome.
